{"id":5457,"date":"2026-03-24T00:50:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T00:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leadershipcounsel.org\/?p=5457"},"modified":"2026-03-25T19:50:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T19:50:29","slug":"assemblymember-boerner-introduces-the-families-and-neighborhood-safety-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leadershipcounsel.org\/es\/assemblymember-boerner-introduces-the-families-and-neighborhood-safety-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Assemblymember Boerner Introduces &#8220;The Families and Neighborhood Safety Act&#8221; to Increase Transparency and Protect Communities\u2019 Right to Clean Water and Air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/strong><br>March 24, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MEDIA CONTACT<\/strong><br>Christian Filbrun, 916-319-2077, <a href=\"mailto:Christian.Filbrun@asm.ca.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">christian.filbrun@asm.ca.gov<\/a><br>Jill Hindenach, 202-494-6309, <a href=\"mailto:jhindenach@leadershipcounsel.org\">jhindenach@leadershipcounsel.org<\/a><br><br><strong>SACRAMENTO, CA<\/strong> \u2014 Assemblymember Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) introduced AB 2170, a bill that would ensure all Californians have access to clean water and air and information about the environmental impacts of proposed heavy industrial projects in their neighborhoods.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AB 2170 would ensure industrial projects with the most potential to harm vulnerable communities, such as landfills, nuclear plants, or chemical production, undergo environmental review and reduce their pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEnvironmental review makes projects better and saves Californians billions of dollars down the line,\u201d said <strong>Assemblymember Boerner<\/strong>. \u201cIt is important that we learn from the costly mistakes of the past and protect our water, air, and health by allowing for common-sense review and access.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failure to build safe industrial development has resulted in massive costs to taxpayers, including close to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthwatch.org\/2024\/10\/01\/los-angeles-lead-battery-smelter-exide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$750 million alone<\/a>&nbsp;to clean up lead pollution from the Exide battery recycling plant in Los Angeles, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/media\/social-burden-pfas-forever-chemicals-california#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20most%20effective,million%20annually%20(2025%20USD).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">billions spent<\/a>&nbsp;across the state to clean up forever-chemicals (PFAS) in drinking water and in healthcare costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill also mandates translation and public notice, so all Californians have access to information about projects that can impact their health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill would result in industrial development that is safer for communities and workers by reducing the risk of exposure to cancer-causing chemical in drinking water and toxic air emissions, and facilitating public participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommunities deserve to know about projects that can impact their health and wellbeing and have ample notice for opportunities to share their concerns.
